Storytime for Grownups is at its core, a protest.
We are protesting the loss for storytime as we grow up.
Who said only kids get to have story read to them!
Adults have the right to listen to stories too!
And so...Storytime for Grownups was born.
But of course, grownups being grownups, need to have their own unique version of storytime.
Stories are how we humans find meaning and impose order on the chaos of life. It is also how we passed down knowledge and wisdom before we had books and writing.
Therefore, Storytime for Grownups is also an ode to to this. Aside from walking away with the pleasure of good storytelling, the session is also meant to be a space where stories can be used as a medium to confront and resolve matters that might be too complex or daunting to digest otherwise.
So not only are the chosen stories more grown up, storytime for grownups is a also little more...hands on.
A key part of the Storytime for Grownups session is the fix-it exercise. Where the listeners of the story become storytellers themselves and try to find alternative resolutions for the conflicts in the story through dialogue and discussion.
We have two versions of the fix-it exercise. One for writers and one for non-writers.

On Children is a collection of true stories form Wu's time as a tutor in Taiwan. It talks about the dysfunction that has taken root in families due to societal pressures and a culture that reveres academic achievement above all else.
For this session, we will be listening to the sixth story: Talent.
只有儿童才能享受故事时间?谁说的?
为什么长大后就再也没有人愿意讲故事给我们听了?
大人就不能听故事吗?
我们不服!我们要抗议!
大人也该有大人的故事时间。大人也有享受听故事的权力!
大人听故事怎么能跟小孩子听故事一样呢?
别以为听完就放你走,听完故事。。。就轮到你了。
什么意思?呵呵。
话说,故事在人类的历史里可是扮演了非常重要的角色。面对世间和人生的无常,人类能够透过故事找到定律。同事,故事也是我们在发明文字之前,传承知识与智慧的主要方法。
故事是很伟大的!
为了充分的发挥故事的伟大,大人的故事时间可不是个享受完故事就可以拍拍屁股走人的体验。我们希望能够透过故事帮助大家正视一些生活里太过复杂或敏感的问题。
所以说,大人的故事时间的一个很大的特点就是听完故事后的 ‘故事大改写’ 游戏。
是的,听完故事的你将从听故事的人变成写故事的人。现实世界里的我们有着许多的无奈,却无力应对。但是在故事的世界里,作者大大就是真理!所以,请你把故事里,你看得不顺眼的东西改写吧!让故事世界里的角色代替现实生活的你,找到新的出口,找到美满结局的方向。
说不定你也会因此找到一些面对自己生活里的无奈的新的出路。
